InnerCity Weightlifting's mission is to amplify the voice and agency of people who have been most impacted by systemic racism and mass incarceration.
We partner with program participants through case management and careers in and beyond personal training. Individuals are elevated as experts in fitness and the social issues they've lived. ICW is a culture and community in which power dynamics are flipped, social capital is bridged, and new leaders emerge in the fight to combat long-standing inequities.
Donating to ICW is more than compassionate, it's a wise investment. For every dollar donated to the program, we generate a 10.6x return in societal benefits by reducing rates of incarceration and promoting employment.
- Case management: ICW's advocates work with students to create Individual Advancement Plans, which include goals for areas such as employment, housing, education, transportation, personal training, and more.
- Basic Needs: Through conversations with our students, we’ve learned that it takes approximately $150-200/week to cover the most basic needs. Donations help us keep our students on payroll and off the streets.
- Student Hardship Fund: The Student Hardship Fund supports students’ acute needs, such as bill payment, rent, and other immediate needs.
- Elexson's Club: Elexson Hercules, a founding member of ICW, was lost in 2012 to the violence he had so desperately tried to get away from. We honor his efforts through the creation of Elexson's Club: a group that supports the mission and work of ICW by making a minimum $1,000 tax-deductible annual donation.
